Savita, aged 26, was an instructor at Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), a mountaineering training center in Uttarkashi. Apart from Savita, another female trainer Naumi lost her life in Tuesday's accident. In May this year, Savita conquered two 8,000-high peaks in just 15 days. On May 12, he conquered the world's highest peak, Everest. Its height is 8,848 meters. On 28th of the same month, this mountaineer set a record by conquering Makalu at 8,463 meters.
Savita, a resident of Lonthru village in Uttarakhand, joined the 'Nehru Institute of Mountaineering' (NIM) permanently as an instructor after conquering two eight thousand peaks. Pahari Kanya did 'Basic' and 'Advanced' courses in mountaineering in 2013 from this institute. Since 2018, he has served as a trainer in that organization.
This time Savita went out to win the 'Draupadi Ka Danda-2' peak of Garhwal Himalayas. Its peak height is 5,670 meters. But this area is also known to be accident prone. According to mountaineering experts, Savita died due to the sudden collapse of the pile of snow accumulated on the mountain slope.
Savita is India's second female Everest climber who lost her life in an accident in the Himalayas. Chanda Gayen of Bengal died while climbing the Yangpung Kang peak after conquering Kanchenjunga in May 2014.
Like Savita, Chanda of Bengal set a record by going to Everest expedition. After conquering Everest in 2013, he also climbed Lhotse Peak in the same expedition. In May 2014, this mountaineer from Bengal went on the Yanglung Kang expedition. There, Chanda, who won Everest, fell into adverse weather conditions and got lost in the mountains. His body has not been recovered till date.
A team of 41 people went on the 'Draupadi Ka Danda-2' campaign. A total of nine trainers, including Savita and Naumi, who won the Everest, participated in it. Three climbers from Bengal were among the students of that team. A total of 25 people, including these three Bengali students, are still missing, according to Uttarakhand administration sources. The bodies of four people including Savita have been recovered.
