Finance Minister against charges on digital payments

News Desk, New Delhi:

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman opened up about digital payments in the country. Yesterday, in front of a reporter, she said that now is not the right time to charge for digital payments. People's enthusiasm for digital payments will be damaged.

Therefore, we still think it is not the right time to make it chargeable. We are more and more pushing towards open digital transactions, digitization and platforms which can enable great access. The RBI's recommendation is to a working paper and lets the working paper where it is," the Minister added.

Her speech was about a proposal of the RBI, where it is said that digital payment is now like a normal payment, so it is good if the government puts any charge there. Most of the digital payments in the country are done through UPI, so charging on UPI can increase the revenue of the government.

There is a storm of controversy surrounding this proposal. Most of the small shopkeepers are involved in this system, they face financial loss if the charges are imposed. On the one hand, ATM control and UPI payment charges will be burdened on the common people. This shows that the government wants to impose financial burden on people in various ways.
