An attempt was being made to smuggle red sandalwood worth crores of rupees by forcing it into a medical van. Smugglers were working to stock this sandalwood in Doors since the lockdown period. The purpose was to smuggle sandalwood in Bhutan.But before that, the police and forest officials caught the smugglers' plot. Two smugglers were arrested during the operation.
Two members of the Pushpa gang were reportedly arrested from Telipara in Duars on Thursday. Their interrogation led to the discovery of a secret dera in Cooch Behar from where red sandal wood was being smuggled. The police seized a few quintals of wood by raiding there. The market price of these woods is crores of rupees. The arrested have been taken into police custody for seven days.
According to the police and forest department, two members of this gang have been arrested from Telipara in Duars. After questioning them, the officials came to know that there was supposed to be a transaction meeting with a Bhutanese businessman. The police took the two traffickers into custody after receiving the information.
But not just a Derai. According to the preliminary investigation, there are several secret bases of Sandal Wood Smuggling in Duars and adjoining areas. During covid, large quantities of red sandalwood from South India have been brought and stored in these deras under the cover of medical vans. From here to Nepal and Bhutan.
