AIDWA Statement on Burdwan police brutality
There was a huge mass rally in Burdwan city, West Bengal demanding punishment of corrupt ministers and officials, against looting of public property and for withdrawal of GST on foodstuff where mamata banerjee's police unleashed brutalities using batons, tear gas and water cannon.
Women activists like young Pritha Taa of CITU were severely beaten up and dragged by their hair into police vans. About 400 men and women were injured in the so-called police action on a peaceful rally making democratic demands. 173 people including many women were arrested and non-bailable cases were lodged against 46 persons including abhash Roy choudhuri, Central committee member of CPIM.
One 68 year old woman who was among the arrested said all the women were beaten up not only by female police but also male police. This was done in front of the SP and at his command. They were given no drinking water and subjected to the dirtiest verbal abuse. She said she has never seen police atrocities of this kind. We strongly condemn the brutal attack of the police on a peaceful rally, particularly on women and demand immediate unconditional release of those arrested and withdrawal of all cases against them.
