Army personnel, civilians denied bail in Kashmir drug smuggling case
On 14th February 2023, in a major development in Kashmir, a court in Kupwara has rejected the bail application of five army personnel and four civilians for running a drug smuggling racket from the Line of Control . The four civilians arrested include Mashkoor Sheikh (working as a porter with the Army),
Mohammad Yousaf Kothari, Saleem Sheikh, and Mohammad Imran [2]. The arrests were made last month in the Tangdhar sector along the Line of Control in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir [3]. This is the second time in two months that security personnel have been arrested in the district for drug smuggling.
Cross-border drug smuggling has become a major challenge for the government and the involvement of security personnel in drug racket is aggravating the problem .
