Rahul Gandhi Disqualified as Lok Sabha MP Following 2019 Defamation Case Conviction

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified from his position as a Lok Sabha MP due to his conviction in a 2019 defamation case for making a statement about "why all thieves have Modi surname."

The disqualification took place the day after a Surat court sentenced him to two years in jail for the same case. This setback is significant, as he will not be eligible to contest elections for the next eight years. Shri Rahul Gandhi represented the Wayanad Parliamentary Constituency of Kerala in the Lok Sabha and was disqualified from his position in accordance with Article 102(1)(e) of the Indian Constitution and Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, following his conviction in case
C.C./18712/2019 by the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Surat.
