PIYALI BASAK MT. ANNAPURNA AND MT. MAKALU SUMMIT SPRING 2023

Piyali Basak: Conquering Mountains, inspiring souls

Spring Season 2023 has witnessed the awe-inspiring journey of Piyali Basak, an exceptional mountaineer and a true inspiration to all. Battling both physical and emotional challenges, Piyali has left an indelible mark on the world of mountaineering, conquering not one, but two of the most treacherous peaks known to mankind: Mt. Annapurna and Mt. Makalu.

Piyali's unassuming demeanor belies the fighting spirit within her, which has propelled her to the top of these geological phenomena. From a very young age, she has faced insurmountable battles and emerged victorious.
This spring season, however, posed unprecedented difficulties and incredibly challenging one for mountaineers in Nepal. Chaotic weather patterns, fierce icy-winds blasting the mountaintops, and the constant threat of avalanches created a formidable backdrop for climbers. But undeterred by these challenges, Piyali and her fellow mountaineers fearlessly ventured forth, pushing themselves to the limits of human endurance.

On April 17, 2023, at 8:25 am, Piyali achieved a monumental feat by reaching the summit of Mt. Annapurna, standing tall at a staggering 8,091 meters. This mountain, renowned as one of the most challenging to conquer, tested her mettle in ways unimaginable. The Annapurna expedition, plagued by avalanches and unfavorable weather conditions, was fraught with delays. The initial summit plan for March 27th had to be postponed, and the subsequent attempt on April 5th faced similar setbacks. Undeterred, Piyali persisted, and on April 15th, she and her Sherpa embarked on a courageous journey from Camp II. However, their ascent was thwarted when they discovered that they could not find the ropes. Patiently waiting at 7,600 meters (3 hours away from summit) for other expedition teams to arrive, they made the difficult decision to retreat after four hours of hopeful anticipation. Piyali, almost reaching the summit without the aid of oxygen, had to descend to lower altitudes. Unfazed by this setback, she rallied once more on April 17th, braving high winds finally conquer the majestic Annapurna, this time she summited but sadly due to the multiple summit pushes and high winds her Sherpa recommended she use supplemental oxygen near summit. Safely returning to base camp, she etched her name in the annals of mountaineering history.

The journey continued as Piyali set her sights on the daunting challenge of Mt. Makalu. On May 17, 2023, at 8:00 am, she stood triumphantly atop this highly technical and rarely attempted peak. Starting her summit push from Camp III, Piyali faced adverse weather conditions and increasing winds. Her vision blurred by snow-blindness, she pressed on, defying the treacherous circumstances. However, her descent was marred by an unexpected encounter with an injured climber, stranded and in need of help. In an act of selflessness and courage, Piyali and her team spent approximately five arduous hours assisting the climber. The high altitude and Piyali's deteriorating vision due to snow-blindness made the descent even more challenging. As their oxygen supplies ran dangerously low and their lives were at stake in addition Piyali had difficulty seeing due to snow blindness, they left Piyali to hurriedly return to Camp III, as Camp IV was deserted, to get additional help. By next afternoon Sherpas came to Piyali’s rescue and brought her down to camp III, and the next day they reached her to Base Camp where she was airlifted and brought to Kathmandu where she received medical attention.

She had challenged herself to summit Mt. Annapurna and Mt. Makalu without supplemental oxygen, a feat that requires immense physical and mental strength.

Piyali has already achieved incredible feats, including summiting Everest and Lhotse within a span of just two days, and ascending Dhaulagiri without the aid of supplemental oxygen and summitting Manaslu. Furthermore, she played a crucial role in the Pioneer Adventure Team's attempt to open a route to Cho Oyu from the south side, reaching an impressive altitude of 7,200 meters. Despite the expedition's ultimate failure due to inclement weather, Piyali's unwavering spirit shines as a testament to her resilience.

The unwavering support and admiration for Piyali are truly remarkable. Having had the privilege of working closely with her, we bear witness to her exceptional abilities and unyielding determination. While some may have doubts and question her accomplishments, we have no doubt that Piyali is capable of achieving anything she sets her mind to. We are grateful to be part of a community that recognizes and celebrates her talents.
