Imphal, July 20 : The main culprit in the case of a woman being paraded naked in Manipur's Kangpokpi district has been arrested, police said on Thursday.
The culprit, identified as Huirem Herodas Meitei (32), was arrested in an operation conducted by a team of police personnel from Pechi Awang Leikai in Imphal West district.
Meitei was seen holding the woman in a video that went viral on social media. He was wearing a green t-shirt in the video.
The police said that Meitei was arrested after proper identification. He is being interrogated by the police.
The incident took place on May 4, when a mob of men molested two women while taking them towards a paddy field to be gang-raped.
The women were rescued by locals and the police were informed.
The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
The arrest of Meitei is a major breakthrough in the case and the police are hopeful of arresting the other culprits soon.
The case has sparked outrage across the country and people have demanded the death penalty for the culprits.
The Manipur government has also announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of the culprits.
