A 21-year-old engineering student studying at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi died by suicide in his hostel room on Saturday. This is the second suicide reported on campus within two months.
The student, identified as Akash, was a second-year student in the electrical engineering department. He was found hanging from the ceiling of his hostel room by his roommates.
Fire department officials were called to the scene to break down the hostel room door, which was shut from inside. The student was pronounced dead at the scene.
Akash's family has been informed of his death. The police are investigating the matter.
This is the second suicide reported on IIT Delhi campus in two months. In July, a 20-year-old student studying in the computer science department died by suicide.
The IIT Delhi administration has said that it is taking steps to address the issue of student suicides. The institute has set up a counseling center and has also started a helpline for students in distress.
The IIT Delhi administration has also urged students to reach out to their friends and family if they are feeling suicidal. They have also asked students to seek professional help if needed.
