Imphal, Manipur: Manipur Police fired several rounds in the air on Wednesday to disperse a mob that surrounded a police station near Chief Minister N Biren Singh's house demanding weapons.
The mob, which was allegedly led by the local youth group Arambai Tenggol, demanded weapons in protest of the state government's inaction following the killing of a senior police officer by an insurgent sniper in the border town of Moreh yesterday.
The mob clashed with security forces and attempted to surround the 1st Manipur Rifles complex in Imphal West district, close to the Raj Bhavan and Chief Minister's office, demanding arms and ammunition, according to police sources.
The security forces baton-charged the mob at first but had to fire in the air as the crowds continued to push in. Some people were injured in the clash, police sources said.
Curfew has been reimposed in Imphal city following the incident.
This is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Manipur, which has been plagued by insurgency for decades. The state government has been facing criticism for its handling of the security situation.
