L&T Sets a Milestone with Paid Menstrual Leave: A Step Towards Workplace Inclusivity

In a significant move resonating with empathy and progressive values, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has introduced a one-day paid menstrual leave policy for its female employees. This initiative, which will benefit approximately 5,000 women working for the parent company, was announced on March 6, 2025, by Chairman and Managing Director S N Subrahmanyan during an International Women’s Day celebration at the company’s Powai office in Mumbai.

Addressing an audience of 350 women employees, Subrahmanyan highlighted the company's commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment. "Acknowledging women's unique health challenges is not just a policy change but a step towards respecting their rights and well-being," he said, receiving applause from the attendees.

The policy applies exclusively to L&T's parent company employees and excludes its subsidiaries in the financial and technology sectors. While the implementation details are still being finalized, this initiative marks a paradigm shift in how corporate India addresses workplace inclusivity and health issues.

A Timely Move Amid Growing Discontent

This announcement also comes at a critical juncture for Subrahmanyan, who faced public criticism recently for advocating a 90-hour workweek and making controversial remarks about work-life balance. With this decision, L&T appears to be reinforcing its commitment to employee welfare and addressing the growing need for gender-sensitive workplace policies.

Joining the Menstrual Leave Movement

L&T's move aligns with a broader trend across India, where companies like Swiggy and Zomato have already implemented menstrual leave policies. At the state level, Odisha has legislated one-day menstrual leave, and Karnataka is deliberating a more extensive six-day paid leave policy. These efforts reflect an evolving mindset towards women's health and workplace inclusivity.

A Small Step with Big Implications

Though modest in scope, L&T's one-day menstrual leave policy is a significant gesture in addressing long-ignored health issues faced by women at work. It also positions the company as a leader in initiating progressive corporate practices, setting a benchmark for others in the industry to follow. For the women of L&T, this policy is more than just a day off—it is a recognition of their needs and an assurance that their health matters. As companies across India and the world continue to evolve, L&T's initiative reminds us that inclusivity starts with understanding, empathy, and action.
