Switzerland Protest: Over 200 Rally in Bellinzona Against NATO and Militarization
A large-scale protest unfolded in Bellinzona, Switzerland, yesterday, where over 200 individuals defied heavy rain to voice their opposition to NATO and the militarization of Europe. Organized by the Communist Party, the “No to NATO – Yes to Peace” demonstration emphasized the importance of preserving Swiss neutrality and avoiding entanglement in foreign military conflicts.
The protest was a response to a controversial proposal from the Swiss Army General Staff to deploy troops to Ukraine, a move that protesters labeled as unnecessary and contrary to Switzerland's policy of non-alignment. Attendees rejected NATO-led missions and expressed concerns over Switzerland’s growing alignment with NATO and the European Union, which they criticized for being increasingly anti-democratic and militarized.
Delegations from other Swiss cantons, including Basel and Geneva, and international representatives, such as Italian geopolitical analyst Stefano Orsi, joined the rally. Organizers noted the demonstration as a reflection of growing public frustration with pro-war rhetoric and called for an intensified commitment to peace and neutrality.
The Communist Party praised the protest as a landmark moment in advocating for Switzerland’s non-interventionist stance, stating that the event had national significance in highlighting the people's resistance to militarization and external military influence.
