Police Brutality Sparks Outrage During Protest at Bikash Bhavan
Kolkata, May 15, 2025: A peaceful demonstration by aspirant teachers and education workers outside Bikash Bhavan turned violent as police allegedly used excessive force to disperse the protesters. Organized by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the rally was aimed at demanding a transparent and corruption-free recruitment process for government teaching jobs.
Eyewitnesses reported that police resorted to baton charges and detained several protesters without prior warning. The demonstrators, which included job-seeking teachers, education workers, and students, accused the authorities of using intimidation tactics under the state government’s directive to suppress dissent.
DYFI leaders condemned the police brutality, labeling it an attack on democratic rights. “The barbaric assault on peaceful protesters is a clear indication of the government's fear of accountability. Instead of addressing corruption in the recruitment process, they are trying to silence voices through force,” said DYFI State President Dhruvjyoti Saha.
Protesters’ Key Demands:
- End police violence and ensure the right to protest.
- Establish a corruption-free and transparent recruitment system.
- Hold those involved in the SSC recruitment scam accountable.
- Strengthen public education institutions and ensure fair job opportunities.
The protest, marred by scenes of chaos and injuries, has sparked widespread criticism from various civil rights organizations. The DYFI announced that they would escalate their movement and demanded a public apology and immediate action against those responsible for the police excesses.
“Police brutality will not break our spirit,” said one protester. “This fight is for justice, and it will continue until our demands are met.”
