Sofia, Bulgaria – June 13, 2025 – A powerful movement is sweeping across Bulgaria as the nation resists the imposition of the euro, set to replace the Bulgarian lev on January 1, 2026. The push for eurozone integration, driven by Bulgaria’s ruling elites and their alignment with Western powers, has sparked widespread opposition among the working class and ordinary citizens. Despite overwhelming public dissent, with polls indicating nearly two-thirds of Bulgarians oppose the move, the government refuses to hold a referendum, ignoring the will of the people.
The adoption of the euro is seen by many as a step toward deeper economic dependence on Western corporations and EU institutions, threatening further impoverishment of Bulgaria’s working class. In response, a grassroots campaign has collected over 600,000 signatures—representing one in ten adult Bulgarians—demanding a democratic vote on the issue. Yet, the authorities, accused of serving imperialist interests, have dismissed the petition and intensified propaganda, censorship, and repression to silence dissent.
Resistance remains steadfast. Almost daily protests erupt across the country, with tens of thousands gathering in Sofia for the largest demonstrations. Some protests have escalated into clashes with police, leading to arrests and detentions of activists. Despite this crackdown, the Bulgarian people’s resolve only grows stronger.

A victory for the Bulgarian people could inspire resistance worldwide, striking a blow against the EU’s expansionist agenda and its alignment with Western imperialist structures, particularly in the context of escalating tensions with Russia.
