Tribute Meeting Held in Memory of Martyr Comrade Ajit Sarkar in Purnia
Purnia, June 14: A solemn tribute and resolution meeting was organized today in memory of Comrade Ajit Sarkar, a martyr and a symbol of the struggle for justice and equality. The program was addressed by prominent CPI(M) leaders, including Central Committee Member Comrade Awadhesh Kumar, State Secretariat Member Comrade Rampari, and District Secretary Comrade Rajiv Singh.
Even after 27 years of his martyrdom, Comrade Ajit Sarkar remains a beloved name among the tribal, Dalit, minority, landless farmers, agricultural laborers, and the poor people of Purnia district. He continues to inspire countless individuals in their fight against oppression and injustice.
Born on November 23, 1947, in the Durgabari area of Purnia, Comrade Ajit Sarkar hailed from a respected Bengali-speaking family. His journey of activism began during his college days, where he actively participated in student movements as a dedicated member of the All India Students' Federation (AISF). After completing his education, he became deeply involved in grassroots struggles against landowners' atrocities and led several farmers' and labor movements in the district.
In 1980, Comrade Ajit Sarkar was elected as an MLA from Purnia, a position he held for four consecutive terms until his martyrdom. He became a beacon of hope for the downtrodden, tirelessly fighting for their rights.
On June 14, 1998, Comrade Ajit Sarkar, along with his driver Harendra Sharma and comrade Asfaqur Rahman, was brutally assassinated in Purnia's Subhash Nagar area.
The meeting concluded with heartfelt tributes to the martyr and a collective pledge to carry forward his legacy of resistance and social justice.
