JALPAIGURI — In a shocking escalation of political violence, the CPM district headquarters in Jalpaiguri was targeted in a brutal firebomb attack on Monday evening. Miscreants allegedly backed by BJP cadres threw petrol bombs into the office while a crucial party meeting was underway, in what party leaders described as a clear attempt to burn senior members alive.
The attack occurred during peak evening hours, causing widespread panic in the area. Smoke engulfed the building within minutes as attendees scrambled to extinguish the flames and evacuate the premises. While several leaders suffered minor injuries and smoke inhalation, major casualties were narrowly averted thanks to the prompt intervention of local residents and party workers.
Local CPM leadership lashed out at the ruling state administration and law enforcement, accusing them of complete failure to maintain law and order. "This is a direct assault on democracy," stated a party spokesperson. "Criminal elements are operating with complete impunity, showing absolute contempt for the rule of law while the police stand by as silent spectators."
In response to the incident, the CPM has issued a stern warning and called for a massive street demonstration across Jalpaiguri tomorrow. Party cadres have been instructed to stage rallies and blockades to protest the rising violence and demand the immediate arrest of the perpetrators.
Tensions remain high across the district, with additional police forces deployed around major political offices to prevent further clashes.
