Later her family settled in Chetla, Kolkata for her father's job. Her family had a musical atmosphere. Father Pandit Mohinimohan Mishra and elder brother Murarimohan Mishra, both were famous singers. Her family surname was Bandopadhyay (Banerjee). Later her family was given the title of 'Mishra'. Her father was also honored with the titles of 'Pandit', 'Sangiratna' and 'Sangitanayak' by the 'Kashi Sangeet Samaj'.
She was sick for quite some time, but refused to go to the hospital for treatment. She breathed her last at his native Chetla. She died of a heart attack around 12:00 pm on Saturday, at the age of 81. Music and music were extinguished. With the magic of her melodious voice, she has charmed Bengali people.
In 1960, Nirmala sang the song of the Odia film 'Shri Loknath'. Nirmala Mishra entered the world of music through that film. After that she gave her voice in many Bengali movies. Notable among them are films like Stree, Kaa, Malajanha, Abhinetree, Anutap, Kie Kaahaara, Amadaa Baata, Adina Megha.
