CPI(M) leader Salim on Wednesday tweeted about the horrific incident of a bridge collapse in Mizoram, which killed 20 migrant workers from West Bengal. Salim expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and said that the plight of migrant workers and joblessness in West Bengal is well known.
The bridge collapse took place on Tuesday near Aizawl, Mizoram. The bridge was under construction and was being built by a private company. The collapse occurred when a large section of the bridge gave way, causing the workers to fall into the river below.
Almost all of the 20 workers who were killed were from Malda district in West Bengal. They had migrated to Mizoram in search of work. The incident has once again highlighted the plight of migrant workers in India.
In his tweet, Salim said, "Our deepest condolences to the family of dead labourers died due to the collapse of the under construction bridge near Aizawl, Mizoram. Almost all of 20 whose bodies were recovered are from Malda (Ratha-2) of WB. Plights of migrant workers and joblessness in WB is well known now."
He also demanded that the state government of West Bengal provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased and ensure that the guilty are brought to justice.
