Cuban Authorities Raise Alert Level as Tropical Storm Idalia Approaches
Cuban civil defense authorities have raised the country's alert level to orange due to the approaching tropical storm Idalia. The Cuban meteorological Institute predicts that Idalia will transform into a hurricane on Monday, and is warning residents to be attentive to the heavy rains in the western part of the island.
Wind gusts of 75 km per hour are expected, along with strong and intense rainfall. The storm is moving slowly at a speed of 11 kilometers per hour, and measures have been implemented to prevent flooding, protect crops, and secure the water supply in affected areas.
The orange alert is the second-highest level of alert in Cuba. It means that there is a high probability of hurricane conditions within 36 hours. Residents in areas under the orange alert are advised to:
- Complete hurricane preparations, including securing loose objects outdoors and stocking up on food, water, and other supplies.
- Stay informed about the latest weather forecasts and warnings.
- Follow the instructions of local authorities.
The Cuban government has activated its disaster response plan and is working to ensure the safety of its citizens. The country has a well-established system for responding to hurricanes, and officials are confident that they will be able to protect the population from harm.
Idalia is the second tropical storm to threaten Cuba this year. In June, Hurricane Elsa caused widespread damage on the island, leaving thousands of people without power and water. The Cuban government is hoping that Idalia will not cause as much damage as Elsa, but residents are being urged to take precautions.
The storm is expected to make landfall in Cuba on Monday or Tuesday. After making landfall, Idalia is expected to weaken and move into the Gulf of Mexico. It is not clear if the storm will make landfall in the United States, but forecasters are monitoring its progress.
