The recent tragedy involving the collapse of an under-construction railway bridge in Mizoram, claiming the lives of 35 migrant laborers hailing from West Bengal, has unveiled a glaring reality. It underscores the absence of safety protocols and dire working conditions that many migrant laborers are subjected to while earning meager wages.
In recent years, there has been an alarming surge in the exodus of migrant workers from West Bengal, laying bare the grim state of the rural economy in the region. The 2011 census reported nearly 5.8 lakh individuals migrating from West Bengal in search of livelihoods, a number that is likely to have surged significantly in the past decade.
Several factors contribute to the burgeoning number of migrant workers from West Bengal. One pivotal reason is the dearth of employment opportunities in rural pockets of the state. Agriculture, which traditionally sustains rural West Bengal, has been on a decline in recent years. This, in turn, has led to a reduced demand for labor in these areas.
Another compelling factor is the abysmally low wages prevalent in the state. West Bengal boasts one of the lowest minimum wage rates in the country, rendering it nearly impossible for its workers to secure a decent living wage.

Often toiling away in perilous environments such as construction sites and factories, these laborers are seldom provided with the necessary safety gear or trained on workplace safety practices. Consequently, this dire situation has resulted in numerous accidents and fatalities among the migrant workforce.
The mounting exodus of migrant workers from West Bengal serves as a glaring testament to the woeful state of the state's rural economy. It is incumbent upon the government to take immediate action to resuscitate rural job prospects and elevate wage standards.
Beyond government intervention, left trade unions extend support to migrant workers, while concurrently advocating for improved working conditions and equitable wages.
The predicament of migrant workers is undeniably multifaceted, demanding comprehensive solutions. Collaboration between the government and unions is imperative to uplift the conditions of these laborers, affording them access to fair employment opportunities and reasonable wages.
