CPI(M) strongly opposes One Nation, One Election proposal

The Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), has strongly opposed the proposal for One Nation, One Election (ONE), which would entail holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The party has described the proposal as a "twin assault on Parliamentary democracy and Federalism as enshrined in our Constitution."

In a statement, the CPI(M) said that the ONE proposal would require significant amendments to the Constitution, and would also entail either curtailing or extending the life of state assemblies to synchronize them with Lok Sabha elections. The party said that this would be "illegal" and "anti-democratic."

The CPI(M) also pointed out that the ONE proposal would benefit the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as it would make it more difficult for opposition parties to campaign and coordinate their efforts. The party said that the ONE proposal is "undemocratic" and "against the principles of federalism."

The CPI(M) is not the only party that has opposed the ONE proposal. Other opposition parties, such as the Congress, the Trinamool Congress, and the DMK, have also expressed their opposition to the proposal.

The Modi government has appointed an 8-member committee headed by former President of India, Ram Nath Kovind to recommend how to proceed to implement ONE. The committee is expected to submit its report within six months.

It is unclear whether the Modi government will be able to implement the ONE proposal, as it would require significant support from opposition parties. However, the CPI(M) and other opposition parties have made it clear that they will strongly oppose the proposal.
