(Burdhwan, West Bengal, January 5, 2024) - The All India Federation of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers (AIFAWH) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Comrade Maharani Konar, one of its founding leaders and former Vice President. Comrade Konar breathed her last today, January 5, 2024, in Burdhwan, West Bengal, at the age of 90.
Comrade Konar, affectionately known as "Ranidi," dedicated her life to the empowerment of women and marginalized communities. Her journey began with the peasant movement in Burdhwan, where she tirelessly organized women and workers, including those dedicated to the vital role of Anganwadi workers and helpers. Throughout her life, she remained affiliated with various organizations working for social justice, including AIKS, AIDWA, and CITU, even serving as a state committee member of the latter.
Her commitment to serving the people extended beyond organizational work. Comrade Konar's dedication to public service led her to be elected as an MLA from Memary, Burdhwan, for three consecutive terms from 1982 to 1991. Throughout her career, she remained unwavering in her fight for the rights of the underprivileged, even facing repression during the semi-fascist terror in West Bengal in the seventies and under the current Trinamool regime.
Married to the late Benoy Konar, a veteran leader of the Kisan movement and CPI(M) in West Bengal, Comrade Konar's dedication to the cause of social justice ran deep. A comrade known for her uncompromising commitment to the working class and her unwavering revolutionary zeal, Ranidi's life serves as an inspiration for generations to come. Her simplicity, kindness, and affection for her comrades earned her the respect and love of many.
Even in her final years, Comrade Konar remained active in the fight for justice. Her passing leaves a void not only in the AIFAWH but also in the hearts of countless individuals who benefited from her dedication and passion.
In her memory, the AIFAWH dips its flag in respect for its fallen leader, Comrade Maharani Konar. May her legacy of selflessness and unwavering commitment to the empowerment of the marginalized continue to guide us as we strive for a more just and equitable society.
