Port-au-Prince, Haiti - Haiti's capital city is in turmoil as a second day of deadly gang violence leaves at least four police officers dead and dozens more injured.
The violence erupted after Haitian gang leader Jimmy "Barbecue" Cherizier vowed to force out Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Heavy gunfire and chaos engulfed the city, with reports of armed men attempting to seize control of the main container port.
Prime Minister Henry's office condemned the violence, calling it "acts of terror orchestrated by armed bandits." The attacks coincided with Henry's visit to Kenya, where he secured a deal to allow Kenyan police officers to assist in tackling Haitian gang violence as part of a UN-approved mission.
Haitian gangs have grown increasingly powerful since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Prime Minister Henry has promised to hold elections by 2025, facing pressure due to the ongoing insecurity in the country.
