An extraordinary hidden topography has been discovered beneath Antarctica's floating ice shelves, reshaping our understanding of the continent's ice dynamics. A team of international scientists studying the underside of the Dotson Ice Shelf in West Antarctica unveiled a complex, upside-down landscape featuring peaks, valleys, and plateaus.
Anna Wahlin, a professor of physical oceanography at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, led the groundbreaking research. Speaking to the BBC, Wahlin shared her astonishment: “We were surprised — we had to double-check it was real. There is a landscape of ice down there we had no idea about before.”
In 2022, Wahlin's team deployed an unmanned submersible to explore the hidden underside of the Dotson Ice Shelf. Over 27 days, the submersible navigated more than 1,000 kilometers beneath 350 meters of ice, creating the first-ever detailed map of this enigmatic ice shelf underside. The data revealed an intricate ice-scape that had remained undiscovered until now.
