In a rare and emphatic statement issued amid mounting speculation, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has addressed rumors surrounding his whereabouts during the recent surge in conflict. Speaking for the first time since the escalation of violence in the capital, Assad categorically denied claims that he fled the country amidst the chaos.
“With the expansion of terrorism in Syria and its arrival in Damascus on the evening of Saturday, December 7, 2024, many began to question my fate and location," Assad said. "Amid a torrent of confusion and false stories, these rumors inadvertently bolstered international terrorism disguised as a Syrian liberation revolution."
The president clarified that he remained in Damascus until the early hours of Sunday, December 8, 2024, overseeing operations and fulfilling his responsibilities. He then relocated to Latakia in coordination with Russian allies to continue managing military operations as the situation in Damascus deteriorated.
In a pointed rebuke to his critics, Assad stated, “Whoever did not abandon the non-Syrian resistance in Palestine and Lebanon, and did not betray his allies who stood with him, cannot be the same person who abandons his people or betrays his army.”
Assad reaffirmed his unwavering allegiance to Syria, expressing hope for a future where the nation regains its sovereignty and freedom. “This does not mean in any way abandoning the authentic national affiliation to Syria and its people,” he said, describing his connection to the nation as unshakable despite any position or circumstance.
The statement comes as tensions remain high in Damascus, with the conflict further exacerbating divisions within the country. Assad’s remarks appear aimed at bolstering his image as a steadfast leader while addressing the swirling narratives surrounding his actions during this critical period.
