Police Brutality in Siliguri’s DYFI Protest: Women Activists Manhandled, Allegations of Revenge for Oxford Protest Surface
Siliguri, March 29, 2025: A peaceful protest organized by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) turned into a scene of chaos and violence as police resorted to heavy-handed tactics, sparking widespread outrage and allegations of human rights violations. The protest, known as the Uttar Kanya Abhiyan, was aimed at addressing issues such as youth unemployment, better living conditions for tea workers, and an increase in workdays under the MGNREGA scheme.
Police Crackdown and Human Rights Violations
The protesters, which included a significant number of women activists, faced a brutal police response that included baton charges and tear gas. Many protesters, including prominent DYFI leaders, were injured in the scuffle. Reports emerged of women activists being manhandled, with accounts of physical and verbal abuse by the police, raising serious concerns about human rights violations.
Meenakshi Mukherjee, a national leader of DYFI, was reportedly slapped and beaten with sticks during the crackdown. Her arrest, along with several other activists, has further fueled anger among supporters and the public.
Analysts Link Police Action to Oxford Protest Incident
Political analysts have suggested that the aggressive police response may have been motivated by a desire for retribution against the DYFI for its earlier protest at the Oxford Union, where West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced sharp criticism.
“The government’s inability to address criticism on an international platform has seemingly resulted in a domestic show of strength,” remarked a political analyst. “This crackdown appears to be more about silencing dissent than maintaining law and order.”
Public and Political Outrage
The crackdown has drawn sharp criticism from human rights organizations, opposition leaders, and civil society groups. Many have condemned the police’s actions as undemocratic and in violation of the right to peaceful assembly.
“Targeting women protesters and assaulting leaders like Meenakshi Mukherjee is not just excessive; it is a direct attack on the values of democracy and justice,” said a human rights activist.
Protests erupted across the state following the incident, with demands for the immediate release of all detained activists and strict action against the police officers responsible for the violence.
Calls for Justice and Accountability
DYFI leaders have called for an independent inquiry into the incident, accusing the state government of using the police as a tool for political oppression. They have vowed to continue their protests across West Bengal until their demands for justice and accountability are met.
“This attack on our movement will not deter us,” said Mukherjee in a statement following her release. “We will keep fighting for the rights of the youth, the laborers, and the marginalized.”
The Road Ahead
The Uttar Kanya Abhiyan was meant to draw attention to critical issues such as unemployment, fair wages for tea workers, and rural development. Instead, it has highlighted the challenges faced by activists in exercising their democratic rights.
As protests continue, the incident has become a flashpoint in West Bengal’s political climate, with growing calls for justice and an end to the suppression of dissent. Whether the government can address these concerns and restore public confidence in democratic principles remains to be seen.
