Protest Over Land Acquisition in Cuddalore Ends Temporarily
Cuddalore district witnessed a tense protest over land acquisition for industrial purposes, particularly for a leather factory. Locals, joined by CPI(M) State Secretary P. Shanmugam and other leaders, rallied against the proposed project, which they argued would affect agricultural land and livelihoods.
The protest escalated following arrests but was temporarily suspended after discussions with district officials at 9:15 PM on Thursday. Authorities, including the District Revenue Officer, Tahsildar, and police officials, assured protesters of an inquiry scheduled for the 28th. They also pledged to address demands, including halting the project on agricultural land and compensating for 9,000 cashew trees felled during preparatory work.
The suspension of the protest hinges on the fulfillment of these assurances. Protesters warned that they would resume their agitation if the promises were not honored.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between development projects and local communities’ rights over agricultural lands.
