Run for Unity on Martyrs' Day in Durgapur
Durgapur, March 23: To commemorate the martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, the Hindustan Steel Employees Union (CITU), in collaboration with the Steel Welfare Trust, organized the "Run for Unity" today in Durgapur. The event received support from IDFC First Bank, Vivekananda Hospital, and IQ City Hospital.
The run was inaugurated by renowned sports personality Bhogirath Samui, an Arjuna Awardee who represented India in shooting at the Olympics, along with Dr. Subarna Goswami, a leading advocate for the movement for justice tilottoma movement.
A total of 147 athletes participated in the event, including 52 women. During his speech, union president Bishwaroop Bandopadhyay highlighted the growing divisive politics in the country and state, urging citizens to unite and protect national harmony. He emphasized the need for more such events to foster unity and celebrate diversity beyond caste and religion.
Other prominent attendees included CPI(M) state committee member and Paschim Bardhaman district secretary Gouranga Chatterjee, former mayor Rathin Roy, and several other leaders and athletes.
This initiative aimed to remind people of the sacrifices of the three martyrs while promoting communal harmony and togetherness through the medium of sports and public participation.
