Venezuela Donates School Supplies to Sahrawi Refugees in Tindouf, Algeria

In a significant gesture of solidarity, Venezuela has delivered essential school supplies to Sahrawi refugee children residing in camps near Tindouf, Algeria. The donations aim to improve educational opportunities for these children, who face numerous challenges in the harsh desert environment.

The Sahrawi refugee population, estimated at 173,600 individuals, has lived in five camps around Tindouf since 1975. These refugees endure extreme living conditions, compounded by food insecurity, limited healthcare, and insufficient access to quality education. Recent global crises, including escalating food prices and reduced international aid, have further strained their resources.

Humanitarian aid for the Sahrawi refugees is coordinated by the United Nations and various agencies, including UNHCR, WFP, UNICEF, and WHO. Together with 28 other humanitarian partners, they have developed the Sahrawi Refugee Response Plan (SRRP) for 2024-2025, which requires $214 million to address critical needs such as nutrition, health, education, water, sanitation, and protection.

Algeria, the host country, plays a vital role in supporting these refugees, consistently bridging operational and financial gaps. The collaboration between the Algerian government, UN agencies, and humanitarian organizations has been essential in sustaining aid efforts.

Venezuela’s contribution aligns with these broader international efforts. The school supplies will help create a more conducive learning environment for Sahrawi children, underscoring Venezuela’s commitment to global solidarity. This donation is part of Venezuela's longstanding support for the Sahrawi people and highlights the importance of collective action in addressing complex humanitarian crises.

This initiative serves as a reminder of the pressing need for sustained international support to meet the essential needs of the Sahrawi refugees and improve their quality of life.
