Minnesota State Senator and Husband Assassinated in Politically Motivated Attack Amid Anti-Trump Protests

Minneapolis, June 14, 2025 – In a shocking act of political violence, former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, a prominent Democratic state senator and vocal anti-Trump activist, and her husband, Mark Hortman, were fatally shot at their home near Minneapolis early Saturday. The targeted attack, described by authorities as a "politically motivated assassination," also left State Senator John Hoffman and his wife wounded in a separate shooting miles away, escalating fears amid ongoing anti-Trump protests across the U.S.

The assailant, still at large, impersonated a police officer, wearing a tactical vest, badge, and using a vehicle equipped with police lights. The suspect first attacked Senator Hoffman’s residence in Champlin around 2 a.m., wounding the senator and his wife, who are now recovering after surgery. Approximately 90 minutes later, the suspect struck the Hortman home in Brooklyn Park, killing the couple. Police engaged the suspect at the scene, but he fled on foot after an exchange of gunfire.

A manifesto and a list of additional targets, including other lawmakers and officials, were found in the suspect’s abandoned vehicle, prompting heightened security for those named. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz condemned the attacks as an "unspeakable tragedy," mourning Hortman as a "remarkable leader." President Donald Trump also denounced the violence, stating, "Such acts will not be tolerated in the United States of America."

The shootings come amid intensifying political tensions, with anti-Trump protests gaining momentum in several cities. Hortman, a long-time Democratic leader known for her outspoken criticism of Trump, was a key figure in Minnesota’s progressive movement. Elected to the House in 2004, she served as Speaker and DFL Leader, leaving behind two children.

Authorities, including the FBI, are conducting a manhunt for the suspect, believed to have meticulously planned the attacks. A shelter-in-place order remains in effect in affected areas, with residents urged to verify law enforcement identities before opening doors.

The killings have sent shockwaves through Minnesota’s political community, raising alarms about the safety of public officials in an increasingly polarized nation. Investigations continue as the state grapples with this unprecedented loss.
