Former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, Longest-Serving CM, Turns 75

GANGTOK, SIKKIM - Today marks the 75th birthday of Pawan Kumar Chamling, a name synonymous with Sikkim's political landscape for over two decades. Born on September 22, 1950, Chamling is not only a former Chief Minister of Sikkim but also holds the unique distinction of being the longest-serving Chief Minister in India, a record he achieved with his uninterrupted tenure from 1994 to 2019.

His remarkable career, which saw him lead the state for five consecutive terms, surpassed the previous record held by West Bengal's Jyoti Basu. Chamling's journey from a grassroots politician to a five-time chief minister is a testament to his enduring influence and vision for Sikkim. He began his political career as a village panchayat president in 1982 and was first elected as an MLA in 1985. After a period as a minister in the Nar Bahadur Bhandari government, he founded the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) in 1993, the party that would become the vehicle for his historic 25-year rule.

A Legacy of Development and Progressive Policies

Chamling's time in office is widely credited with transforming Sikkim. He focused on sustainable development and initiated several groundbreaking policies that earned the state national and international recognition.

  • 100% Organic State: One of his most significant achievements was the declaration of Sikkim as India's first fully organic state in 2016. This was the culmination of a long-term policy to phase out chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

  • Green Mission: His government also launched a "Green Mission" to increase the state's forest cover, an effort that received the prestigious Future Policy Gold Award from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

  • Social Initiatives: His administration implemented progressive social welfare schemes, including a small family scheme to encourage late marriages for girls and a 50% reservation for women in urban and local bodies.

The End of an Era

Despite his long and dominant run, the political tide turned against Chamling in recent years. In the 2019 assembly elections, his SDF party was unseated by the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), led by his former protégé Prem Singh Tamang. Chamling and his party suffered a further and more dramatic defeat in the 2024 state assembly elections. For the first time in nearly four decades, Chamling will not be a part of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly after losing both the seats he contested.

While his political fortunes may have changed, Pawan Kumar Chamling's legacy as a transformative leader and the longest-serving chief minister in Indian history remains an integral part of the nation's political narrative.
