MILAN, Italy – A massive nationwide general strike in solidarity with Palestine has brought Italy to a standstill, with over 75 cities experiencing widespread disruption.
The protests, which drew tens of thousands of participants, had a significant economic impact, particularly through port blockades. In key ports like Genoa and Livorno, striking dockworkers successfully prevented the transit of goods, including what they believe to be arms shipments to Israel.
The demonstrations turned violent in Milan, where clashes between protesters and police left approximately 60 officers injured.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the violence, stating on social media that such acts were "shameful" and would only harm Italian citizens.
The widespread public mobilization underscores a growing frustration with the government's stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and signals a potential shift in public opinion, challenging Italy's traditional political alignment and calling for a re-evaluation of its role in the global arena.
