North Korea Conducts Hypersonic Missile Drills Under Kim Jong Un’s Supervision

PYONGYANG – The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has announced the successful conduct of missile exercises involving hypersonic weaponry, aimed at verifying the combat readiness and mobility of its strategic forces.

Key Details of the Launch

According to a report by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the drills took place yesterday in the Yeokpho region. The hypersonic missiles were launched in a northeasterly direction, traveling approximately 1,000 km before successfully striking their designated targets.

The primary objectives of the exercise included:

  • System Assessment: Evaluating the readiness of hypersonic weapon systems.

  • Combat Verification: Confirming the operational capabilities and mobility of the deterrent forces.

  • Personnel Training: Training missile units in real-world fire application.

Strategic Context and Kim Jong Un’s Remarks

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally oversaw the launches. He emphasized that the frequent demonstration of the North's strategic strike capabilities is a "vital and effective way to deter war."

"Recent geopolitical crises and international events explain why these measures are necessary," Kim stated, likely referencing the ongoing situation in Venezuela.

He further noted that these tests serve to consistently strengthen the nation's nuclear deterrent. Kim highlighted recent progress in the practical application of nuclear weaponry and called for the continuous modernization of offensive systems to stay ahead of global security shifts.

Technical Analysis

While Pyongyang did not officially name the specific missile system used, defense analysts suggest it may be the Hwasong-11D/Ma (화성-11마). This short-range ballistic missile is equipped with a Hypersonic Glide Vehicle (HGV) and was first tested in October of last year.

The nature of yesterday's flight path suggests a focus on testing low-altitude gliding capabilities and extended range performance.

Leadership Presence

Accompanying Kim Jong Un at the launch were high-ranking defense officials, including:

  • Kim Jong Sik: First Deputy Director of the WPK Defense Industry Department.

  • Jang Chang Ha: Head of the General Missile Bureau.
