NEW DELHI — Opposition lawmakers staged a coordinated demonstration inside the Parliament complex, protesting against police crackdowns and legal measures directed at student demonstrators across the country.
Targeting the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led administration, leaders from the Opposition bloc accused the government of betraying the country's youth, damaging the public education system, and resorting to state force and legal intimidation to suppress student voices.
"Anti-Student and Deceitful": Opposition Mounts Fierce Attack
Leading the demonstration, Opposition leaders condemned the administration's handling of youth-led protests, charging that state machinery is being weaponized to silence legitimate student grievances.
"The Modi government is both anti-student and deceitful. Having already devastated the nation's education system, it is now actively targeting the youth—backing out of its promises, detaining young protesters, and slapping criminal charges against them," the Opposition declared during the protest.
Key Demands Raised by the Opposition
During the parliamentary standoff, Opposition members outlined key demands to safeguard student rights and demand accountability from the government:
Immediate Halt to Police Action: An immediate end to all police crackdowns, detentions, and legal cases filed against protesting students.
Action Against Perpetrators of Violence: Strict disciplinary and legal punishment for those responsible for unleashing force on peaceful student demonstrators.
Educational Accountability:
Systemic reforms to address student grievances and ensure protection for the future of the nation's youth.
Escalating Tensions in Parliament
The parliamentary disruption comes in the wake of growing friction between student organizations and law enforcement. Recent rallies over paper leaks and educational policies were met with heavy police deployment, detentions, and criminal charges.
Declaring that they "will under no circumstances tolerate atrocities against the country's students," Opposition leaders vowed to continue pressing the government inside and outside Parliament until accountability is established and all cases against student activists are withdrawn.
