BENGALURU — On September 5, journalists, civil rights activists, and public intellectuals gather across India to mark the death anniversary of Gauri Lankesh, the editor and rationalist whose assassination in 2017 sent shockwaves through the country.

The Night Dissent Was Targeted

On the evening of September 5, 2017, Lankesh was shot dead outside her Rajarajeshwari Nagar residence in Bengaluru as she returned from work. Known for her Kannada weekly Gauri Lankesh Patrike, she was an outspoken advocate for social justice, anti-caste movements, and the defense of free speech.

Her murder, carried out by assailants linked to extreme right-wing networks, shared chilling operational similarities with the earlier assassinations of fellow rationalists Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare, and M.M. Kalburgi.

The Fight for Accountability

An extensive investigation by the Karnataka Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) uncovered a organized conspiracy aimed at targeting secular writers and critics. While formal charges were filed naming 18 individuals, the trial has experienced prolonged delays in the judicial system, drawing ongoing criticism from media watchdogs and rights groups.

Following her assassination, the slogan "I Am Gauri" became a national rally cry for press freedom and civil liberties. Nearly a decade after her death, Lankesh's work continues to serve as an enduring symbol of resistance against political extremism, intimidation, and the silencing of critical voices.
