Former Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has acknowledged that the student-led protest movement defeated his party in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, citing preliminary results that put the opposition ahead by dozens of seats.
“There will be between 135 and 140 mandates, we have 105,” Vucic said, referring to the projected number of parliamentary seats won by the student-led list and his party, respectively.
He stressed, however, that the final election results were not yet available.
Vucic added that no other major parties had secured seats in parliament, apart from several minority parties.
Serbia is voting for its next government and Vucic is running for prime minister. His ruling coalition has been polling strongly against a student-backed opposition movement, attempting to remove SNS from government after 14 years in power.
