The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) announced on Saturday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would officially open Goa's second international airport in Mopa on Sunday during his visit to the state. The airport is located in the city of Mopa. The airport, which was constructed at a cost of 2,870 cr, is scheduled to start accepting passengers on January 5.
An official said that it has the potential to serve as a significant logistical hub that would directly link a large number of local and international locations. The airport was developed at a cost of approximately 2,870 crores and was built on the concept of sustainable infrastructure. It features a solar power plant, green buildings, LED lights on the runway, rainwater harvesting, and a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant with recycling facilities, amongst other facilities of this type.

The process to build the airport took place in 2014, and the winning bid was announced in 2016. On November 13, 2016, Prime Minister Modi participated in the ceremony to lay the foundation stone.After making a commitment to share 36.99% of the airport's operational earnings with the state government, GMR Infrastructure was awarded the contract to develop, manage, and eventually transfer the airport. GMR Infra will be granted concession rights for a total of 50 years, with an additional 20 years available as an option. It will also be the first airport in Goa that is capable of handling goods.
