The canteen, which is located at the Government General Hospital in Hubli, is the brainchild of the transgender collective ‘Arunodaya’. The collective, which was formed in 2017, is the first transgender organisation in Karnataka, and the members have been striving to create a space of their own within the community. The transgender collective is supported by the Department of Women and Child Welfare, which provides them with a monthly stipend and basic infrastructure for the canteen. The canteen, which operates from 9am to 11pm, serves a variety of dishes, including South Indian and North Indian cuisine. The members of the collective hope that the canteen will be able to provide them with a sense of pride and purpose, as well as financial stability.
The canteen is a part of a larger effort by the Department of Women and Child Welfare to recognise and support the rights of transgender individuals, and to create a safe and inclusive environment for them.
