A distressing incident occurred on Wednesday night at Jantar Mantar when a group of protesting wrestlers clashed with the Delhi Police. The police have reported that one person sustained injuries during the altercation and have advised the wrestlers to file a complaint. This marks the first instance of a law and order issue arising during the week-long protest.
According to the wrestlers, a group of inebriated Delhi Police officers targeted them late in the evening when they attempted to bring mattresses to sleep on following a day of heavy rain. The officers physically assaulted them and verbally abused the female wrestlers. Several of the wrestlers were struck on the head, and two were injured, with one individual losing consciousness and requiring hospitalization.
The Delhi Police released an official statement claiming that Mr. Somnath Bharti arrived at the protest site with folding beds without permission and that when supporters became aggressive while attempting to retrieve the beds from a truck, a minor altercation ensued. Mr. Bharti and two others were subsequently detained.
