Domestic Breeding Checkers Strike Enters 2nd Day, Demand Regularisation of Jobs
New Delhi, August 1, 2023: Domestic breeding checkers (DBCs) under the banner of Anti Maleria Ekta Karamchari Union (CiTU) continued their strike for the second day on Tuesday, demanding regularisation of their jobs.
The DBCs, who are responsible for checking mosquito breeding in the city, have been working on a contractual basis for the past several years. They are demanding that their jobs be regularised and that they be given all the benefits that regular municipal employees enjoy.
The DBCs have been protesting outside the Civic Centre in New Delhi since Monday. They have also submitted a memorandum to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) authorities, demanding that their demands be met.
The MCD authorities have so far not responded to the DBCs' demands. The DBCs have threatened to continue their strike if their demands are not met soon.
In a statement, the CiTU said that the DBCs are "the backbone of the MCD's mosquito control programme". The union said that the DBCs are "working in difficult and hazardous conditions" and that they deserve to be regularised.
The CiTU has called on the MCD authorities to "immediately regularise the jobs of the DBCs" and to "give them all the benefits that regular municipal employees enjoy".
The strike by the DBCs is a major setback for the MCD's mosquito control programme. The MCD is already struggling to control the spread of mosquito-borne diseases in the city. The strike by the DBCs is likely to further worsen the situation.
The DBCs have said that they are willing to hold talks with the MCD authorities to resolve the issue. However, they have made it clear that they will not withdraw their strike until their demands are met.
