August 31 is a day of remembrance in West Bengal for those who lost their lives in a police firing at a peaceful rally protesting massive inflation in food prices in 1959. The rally was organized by the Left Front, a coalition of communist and socialist parties.
Despite heavy rain, a large number of people gathered at Dharmatala in Kolkata to participate in the rally. The protesters were demanding that the government take steps to control the rising prices of food.
