Kochi: Kochi Metro, Kerala's own metro system, has achieved operational profit in the financial year 2022-23. The Kochi Metro, which started its services in June 2017, has achieved this feat despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The operational income of Kochi Metro has increased from Rs 54.32 crore in the year 2020-21 to Rs 134.04 crore in the financial year 2022-23. This is due to the increase in the number of passengers. In 2017, when Kochi Metro started its operations, 59,894 people travelled through it. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of passengers decreased significantly. However, the efforts of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) helped to bring more passengers to the metro. As a result, the average daily ridership crossed 80,000 in January 2023 and reached over one lakh.
The fact that Kochi Metro, a prestigious project of Kerala, has achieved operational profit will give strength to our development leap.
