New Delhi, September 20, 2023: The Women's Reservation Bill (Nari Shakti Vandan Bill) was passed in the Lok Sabha on the third day of the special session of Parliament on September 20. In a ballot vote, 454 votes were cast in favor of the bill and 2 against it. The bill will now be presented in the Rajya Sabha on September 21.
Under this bill, 33% reservation will be implemented for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The bill was first introduced in 1996 but has not been passed so far.
Speaking in favor of the bill in the Lok Sabha, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said that the bill is a historic achievement for the women of the country. He said that the bill will help to empower women and give them political empowerment.
Opposition parties opposed the bill. The Congress party said that the bill is against the basic structure of the constitution. The BJP said that the bill is a great opportunity for women.
Now the bill will be presented in the Rajya Sabha. Once the bill is passed in the Rajya Sabha, it will become law.
