Breaking News: Usharani, President of AIFAWH, Detained by Assam Police

In a concerning development, Usharani, President of the All India Federation of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers (AIFAWH), was detained by Assam Police at Guwahati Airport today. Usharani, who also serves as the Secretary of CITU, was on her way to extend support to the ongoing struggle of anganwadi workers and helpers in Assam.

The anganwadi workers and helpers in Assam have been on strike since February 13th, 2024, demanding an increase in wages and resolution of other pertinent issues. Despite recommendations from the Department of Women and Child Development, the Assam government has failed to act, leading to continuous protests in Guwahati since February 26th, 2024. The situation escalated when the authorities resorted to lathi charges against the peaceful demonstrators, resulting in serious injuries to Indira Newar, General Secretary of the Union and Secretary of AIFWAWH.

Usharani's detention comes amidst growing tensions between the government and the protesting workers. The police justified their actions citing the anti-CAA protests in Assam, issuing a notice accusing the protesters of disrupting peace and engaging in vandalism.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with AIFAWH and CITU accusing the BJP-led government of curbing democratic and trade union rights. They assert that such actions are part of a broader pattern of targeting marginalized communities and minorities, inciting communal discord, and suppressing dissent.

AIFAWH has called for the immediate release of Usharani and urged the Government of Assam to engage in dialogue to address the grievances of the anganwadi workers and helpers. The public is encouraged to support the workers' struggle for fair wages and the strengthening of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS).
