In a joint operation conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), a significant arms cache was discovered in a residence in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. The raid, which took place on Friday, unfolded as part of the ongoing security measures during the second phase of the 18th Lok Sabha elections.
Officials from the CBI and CRPF, acting on specific intelligence, targeted the residence of Sheikh Shahjahan, a prominent leader associated with the Trinamool Congress party. Located in Mallikpur, Sandeshkhali, the house was found to be situated amidst dense thickets on a secluded island, approximately 300 meters away from the main residence.
During the 14-day security lockdown, the raid unearthed a cache of arms, including 12 grenades, a large quantity of cartridges, and materials used in bomb-making. Most notably, the majority of the recovered grenades were found to be of foreign origin, raising concerns about potential international connections.
The operation, which commenced around noon, saw the deployment of CRPF personnel alongside CBI officials in five teams. Despite the dilapidated condition of the house and its lack of electricity, the search yielded significant results. Additionally, the presence of Sheikh Shahjahan's nephew, Abutaleb Molla, at the residence raised further questions regarding the ownership and purpose of the discovered arms cache.
Upon the discovery of the arms cache, the area was immediately cordoned off by CRPF personnel, and the entire premises were secured. Utilizing robotic technology and metal detectors, the officials meticulously searched the area for any hidden explosives, ensuring the safety of the surroundings.
The recovery of the arms cache, along with suspicious information related to Sheikh Shahjahan, has sparked an intensive investigation by the CBI. The involvement of Israeli-made explosives and the recovery of foreign and domestic firearms have further escalated concerns regarding potential criminal activities and their implications for national security.
