CPI(M) Calls for Boycott of BJP's Murugar Conference in Madurai, Citing Political Motives

Madurai, June 14, 2025 - The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) has urged people who value peace and unity, as well as true devotees of Lord Murugan, to boycott the upcoming Murugar Devotees' Conference organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Madurai. The conference, scheduled for June 22, has been labeled by CPI(M) State Secretary P. Shanmugam as a political event disguised as a spiritual gathering, aimed at leveraging religious sentiments for electoral gain.
In a video message posted on X, Shanmugam criticized the BJP for exploiting the religious sentiments of Hindu devotees, drawing parallels to the party's strategies in North India. He accused the BJP of attempting to stir communal tensions in Tamil Nadu, a state known for its secular fabric, by using Lord Murugan as a political tool. "They want to turn Tamil Nadu into a land of strife using Lord Murugan as a political tool," Shanmugam stated.
Shanmugam's call to action comes amidst a backdrop of heightened political activity in Tamil Nadu, where the CPI(M) has been vocal in its opposition to the BJP's policies and presence. The CPI(M) leader's stance is further contextualized by his recent election as State Secretary in January 2025 at the party's 24th State conference in Villupuram, highlighting his influential role within the party.
The BJP's conference has faced criticism for its political undertones, with Shanmugam pointing out past instances where the BJP allegedly disregarded court orders, such as the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992 despite assurances to the Supreme Court. He expressed skepticism about the BJP's adherence to the conditions imposed by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court for the event, which has granted permission for the conference but with specific stipulations.
In response, the Hindu Munnani, the organizing body behind the conference, has defended the event, stating it aims to address issues like poor road conditions and restrictions on annadhanam (free meals) for foot pilgrims in Palani, as well as the deterioration of Murugan temples. The group expects over five lakh participants and has invited Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, framing the event as a movement to protect Sanatan Dharma and temples.
The CPI(M)'s appeal is part of a broader narrative of secularism in India, constitutionally affirmed since 1976, but often contested in political discourse. The 1994 Supreme Court case, S. R. Bommai v. Union of India, reaffirmed India's secular status, yet the CPI(M) continues to position itself against what it perceives as the BJP's efforts to undermine this principle.
As the date of the conference approaches, the political landscape in Tamil Nadu remains tense, with the CPI(M) rallying secular forces to protect the honor, tradition, and unity of Madurai's people. The outcome of this standoff could have significant implications for the state's political dynamics and the ongoing debate over secularism in India.
