CPI(M) Delegation Visits Uri to Assess Shelling Damage, Slams Government Inaction
Uri, June 11, 2025: A high-level delegation from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI(M), led by General Secretary Comrade M.A. Baby, conducted an on-ground assessment of the devastation caused by recent cross-border shelling in Uri, Jammu & Kashmir, on June 10, 2025. The visit highlighted the party’s commitment to standing with conflict-affected communities while sharply criticizing the government’s inadequate response to the crisis.
The delegation, comprising prominent CPI(M) leaders such as MPs Amra Ram, K. Radhakrishnan, John Brittas, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya, S.U. Venkatesan, A.A. Rahim, and MLA M.Y. Tarigami, toured multiple affected areas, including temporary shelters and the Trade Facilitation Centre in Salam Abad, Uri. They met with families displaced by the shelling and drone attacks, witnessing firsthand the destruction of homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
Comrade M.A. Baby condemned the administration’s relief efforts as “grossly insufficient,” pointing out that the promised compensation of Rs 1.30 lakh per affected family fails to address the scale of the losses. “The people of Uri have faced relentless shelling and drone attacks from across the border, yet the government’s response is apathetic. This is not just a failure of relief but a betrayal of those living in conflict zones,” he stated.
The CPI(M) delegation called for immediate and comprehensive rehabilitation measures, including higher compensation, rebuilding of damaged infrastructure, and enhanced security to prevent future attacks. They also urged the central government to prioritize diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions with Pakistan, emphasizing that peace is essential for the safety and well-being of border communities.
Local residents shared harrowing accounts of loss and displacement, with many expressing frustration over delayed relief and lack of basic amenities in temporary shelters. The CPI(M) leaders assured the affected families of their continued advocacy, vowing to raise the issue in Parliament and press for accountability.
The visit underscores CPI(M)’s long-standing focus on championing the rights of marginalized and conflict-affected communities. By spotlighting the plight of Uri’s residents, the party aims to pressure the government into taking decisive action to address both immediate relief needs and long-term security concerns in the region.
