Devanahalli, Karnataka — In a stark display of force, the Karnataka state government cracked down on a peaceful protest against forced land acquisition in Channarayapatna Hobli, Devanahalli Taluk. Organized under the banner of Samyukta Horata Karnataka, the demonstration witnessed a brutal lathi charge, leading to injuries and the detention of several leaders, including representatives from farmers' organizations, civil society groups, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)].
CPI(M) has condemned the incident, accusing the state government of suppressing democratic dissent through intimidation and violence. The party highlighted that the protest was organized to demand fair treatment and adequate compensation for farmers whose lands have been acquired for large-scale industrial projects.
The controversy comes amid the development of Foxconn’s $2.5 billion "Project Elephant" factory in Devanahalli. While the project promises to create 40,000 jobs and drive regional economic growth, it has also triggered concerns over displacement and the lack of transparency in the acquisition process.
In response to the crackdown, CPI(M) has called for statewide protests on June 26, urging citizens to stand in solidarity with the affected farmers and demand accountability from the government. District committees have been directed to organize demonstrations across the state.
