RAIPUR, Chhattisgarh – July 30, 2025 – A high-level delegation comprising leaders from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), Communist Party of India (CPI), and Kerala Congress (M) (KC(M)) today strongly condemned the targeted attacks on Christian and Adivasi communities in Chhattisgarh, alleging a "free hand" for Bajrang Dal activists and demanding immediate government intervention.
The delegation, which included CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat, CPI(M) MPs K. Radhakrishnan and A.A. Rahim, CPI leader Annie Raja, CPI MP P.P. Suneer, and KC(M) MP Jose K. Mani, visited the nuns who have been jailed on what they described as "false charges of conversion" in Chhattisgarh. They also met with Adivasi youth Sukhmai Mandavi, who has reportedly faced similar allegations.
In a scathing statement, the delegation highlighted the alleged intimidation of the nuns by Bajrang Dal activists "in front of the police," suggesting a complete breakdown of law enforcement. They further detailed how "young Adivasi women and Mandavi were also beaten and abused," attributing this violence to the "utter impunity enjoyed by the Bajrang Dal hooligans."
The delegation also extended their outreach to members of the Christian community in Durg and met with colleagues of the incarcerated nuns, gathering first-hand accounts of the prevailing situation.
Further escalating the concerns, the delegation reported that on Wednesday, while a bail application for the accused was being moved in court, "Bajrang Dal hoodlums reached the Court and started shouting slogans to prevent the possibility of bail." This incident, they asserted, underscores the alarming level of intimidation and interference by these groups.
Following their interactions, the delegation submitted a comprehensive memorandum to the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. Their demands include:
* The unconditional release of the nuns and Sukhmai Mandavi.
* The immediate withdrawal of the "false FIR" lodged against them.
* The swift arrest of all individuals involved in attacking the nuns and assaulting the Adivasis.
* A firm guarantee of the constitutional right of freedom of conscience for all citizens.
* Ensuring the safety and security of minority communities in Chhattisgarh.
The delegation's visit and strong condemnation bring renewed national attention to the escalating tensions in Chhattisgarh and put pressure on the state government to address the allegations of targeted violence and ensure justice for the affected communities.
