CPI(M) Extends Outside Support to TVK to Form Government in Tamil Nadu, Citing Federalism and Secular Concerns

CHENNAI — In a decisive move to resolve the post-election political impasse in Tamil Nadu, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has formally extended outside support to actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The decision paves the way for government formation following the April 2026 Assembly elections.

The TVK emerged as the single largest party in the state, securing 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly—just ten seats short of the 118-seat simple majority mark. The post-poll landscape was marked by prolonged deliberation from the Governor's office regarding an invitation to the TVK to form the government. This delay triggered a brief political crisis, amid allegations from various quarters of attempts to engineer alternative coalitions or impose President’s Rule.

Preserving the Popular Mandate

In an interview detailing the party’s strategic stance, CPI(M) Politburo member U. Vasuki stated that the intervention was necessary to uphold democratic norms, protect federalism, and respect the electorate's mandate for a non-BJP administration.

"Our support to the TVK is a principled stand to prevent any undemocratic central intervention and to ensure that the mandate of the people is respected," Vasuki said. "It is imperative to prevent any backdoor attempts to impose President’s Rule or install a regime contrary to the public's choice."

Conditional and Independent Backing

The CPI(M), which holds two seats in the new Assembly, clarified that its alignment with the TVK is strictly limited to outside legislative support during the upcoming floor test.

  • No Cabinet Participation: CPI(M) legislators will not join the council of ministers.

  • Legislative Independence: The party will maintain its independent identity in the Assembly.

  • Issue-Based Support: The Left bloc reserves the right to oppose the treasury benches on policy matters that diverge from its core ideological principles.

A Shifting Coalition Landscape

The CPI(M)’s announcement aligns with similar declarations of outside support from the CPI, the Indian National Congress, and other secular parties, effectively pushing the TVK-led alignment past the required majority threshold. Reports indicate that the TVK has consolidated its position ahead of the trust vote, reportedly drawing additional floor support from sections of the AIADMK.

Following these developments, Raj Bhavan is expected to formalize the invitation for government formation, with TVK chief C. Joseph Vijay anticipated to take the oath of office as Chief Minister shortly.

Political Implications

Political analysts view the 2026 election results and subsequent alignments as a landmark shift in Tamil Nadu’s political architecture, effectively disrupting the decades-long bipolar dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. The CPI(M)’s strategic backing underscores a pragmatic realignment focused on safeguarding state autonomy and secular politics, even as the party maintains its traditional distance from non-Left governance frameworks.
